Alleging that Tamil Nadu was heading towards a “destructive path” under the DMK rule, the AIADMK on Friday said irregularities were rampant in all government schemes and departments.

Talking to reporters after their eviction from the Assembly, deputy leader of the AIADMK Legislature Party O. Panneerselvam said the State was witnessing smuggling of sand, granites and essential goods meant for public distribution system.

Illegal lottery business was thriving. Family members of the ruling party leader had brought the entire film world under their control.

“Instead of addressing these issues, the Chief Minister is wasting his time attending cultural events organised by sycophants,” Mr. Panneerselvam alleged. He also accused the DMK government of betraying the interests of the State in inter-State river water disputes such as the Cauvery water dispute and the Mullaperiyar dam issue.

In a separate statement, AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa said instead of formulating schemes to generate power, the DMK government had announced a few schemes in the Governor's address at the fag end of its tenure in office. “This goes to show the inefficiency of the government.”

Ms. Jayalalithaa said the textile industry that used to generate foreign exchange had been crippled because of substantial hike in the price of yarn. “No constructive measures have been announced for reviving the industry.” Ms. Jayalalithaa said though it was a matter of pride that Nobel laureates such as C.V. Raman and S. Chandrasekhar were from Tamil Nadu, the State today has been shamed by the 2G spectrum scam.

CPI (M) leader in the House K. Balabharathi said that despite a court order banning illegal sand mining, ruling party members were smuggling sand all over the State. “Law and order situation is deteriorating. Murders, burglary, sexual assault on women, usury and many other criminal activities remain uncontrolled.”
