Heavy but unusual summer rain in catchments of the Stanley reservoir at Mettur has brought copious inflows since Sunday morning, brightening the chances of opening it on the scheduled date of June 12 for the upcoming irrigation season for delta districts.
PWD sources said that the catchments falling under Krishnagiri district have been receiving moderate to heavy rainfall for the past three days.
It was 3,078 cusecs on Saturday, which jumped to 9,017 cusecs on Sunday morning. On Monday morning, the dam recorded 28,400 cusecs, raising its water level from 108.56 feet on Saturday to 110.54 feet on Monday evening. “However the inflow has come down to 11,000 cusecs by Monday evening,” said a senior official.
Even with the water level at 90 feet, the dam can be opened for irrigation.
The discharge on Monday stood at 800 cusecs for drinking water schemes downstream.
