Speed governors must for vehicles carrying students

June 12, 2010 01:19 am | Updated 01:19 am IST - CHENNAI:

The State government has made mandatory the installation of speed governors for vehicles used by educational institutions for transporting students.

Omnibuses owned by educational institutions, contract carriage omnibuses under contract with educational institutions and motor cabs/tourist taxies/maxi-cabs used to ferry students should be fitted with speed governors, according to an order issued by K. Gnanadesikan, Principal Secretary (Home), on Thursday.

The maximum speed of such vehicles has been fixed at 50 km/hour. These vehicles, already registered, should have speed governors within six months. It was up to the authorities concerned to ensure that the speed governor was fitted and the official seal of the permit-granting authority affixed on it. The manufacturer of the speed governors would obtain an approval certificate from any of the testing agencies. Every vehicle would display “Speed governor installed,” legibly in Tamil and English, at the bottom of both front and rear windscreens. The letters, having 15 cm height with appropriate thickness, should be in white colour.
