As many as six child marriages were stopped in Dharmapuri district on Monday, said a release issued by P. Amutha, Collector, here on Wednesday.
All the six brides were sent to homes for women. The release said marriages of M. Akila (17), daughter of Muthusamy from Kottaloomarampatti village; A. Pavithra (17) daughter of Anandan of Kattunayakkana Alli village and M. Shanthi (16), daughter of Kuzhipatti colony near Pavalathur in Pennagaram taluk, were stopped by revenue officials with the cooperation of police.
G. Renuka (14), daughter of Govindasamy from Maravadi village; C. Sangeetha (17), daughter of Chinnasamy from Kadathikolmedu village near Nallur and C. Karthika, daughter of Chandran from Kathirampatti village in Palacode taluk, were also stopped.
So far, fifty-five marriages have been stopped by the district administration.
The evil of child marriage could be eradicated only if people cooperate with the administration and create awareness among rural people, adds the release.
