Members of Federation of Tamil Nadu Sand Lorry owners Associations demand that the State Government must open more sand quarries to arrest fraudulence in private yards.

At a press briefing held here on Monday, the Federation office bearers said with the Government closing down many quarries operated through Public Works Department, the sand lorries are forced to buy sand from private yards.

Nearly 15 quarries were being operated in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts until three years ago. It has now been reduced two facilities in Kancheepuram, they said.

Federation’s president S.Yuvaraj said about 8,000 lorries are being operated in and around Chennai. Nearly 7,000 lorry loads are needed daily in the city. The sand lorry owners have to purchase sand from a private yard owner who claims to be engaged in second sale of sand. “We pay an exorbitant amount of Rs.2, 400-Rs.3,000 for two units. The price fixed by the Government is Rs.626 for two units,” he said.

The waiting time of the lorries often extends to two days as only limited number of lorries would be loaded with sand during the day. Several labourers are affected due to the unavailability of work, he added.

Members have decided to intensify protest by observing fast if the Government does not take action.
