Salem court denies bail to green activist Piyush Manush

Judicial Magistrate 1, M. Kalaivani, dismissed the bail application of Piyush Manush, convener of the Salem Citizens’ Forum, while two others of the forum were granted conditional bail here on Thursday.

When his bail application was taken up for hearing in the evening, police opposed granting bail to Piyush Manush and said that three cases related to law and order issues were registered against him in the city police stations.

The police argued against granting bail to the convener while they did not oppose granting bail to two others, Esan Karthik and Muthu. The magistrate dismissed the bail application of Piyush but granted conditional bail to the other two and asked them to sign at 5 p.m. for 15 days at the Town Police station.

Later, both were released from Salem Central Prison.

Supporters of the activist gathered on the court premises and expressed their disappointment over dismissal of the bail application and said they would approach higher court on the issue.

The city police on July 8 arrested the three when they attempted to prevent the construction of a flyover at Mulvadi Gate area in the city.

PUCL plea

The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has urged the State government to release Piyush Manush and withdraw the case against him.

In a statement, PUCL president G. Saraswathi and general secretary G. Balamurugan said the three activists were charged under non-bailable sections.
