Rumour creates flutter

Sattur: The rumour that a student fainted after being given a shot of measles-rubella vaccine at a school here triggered tension among scores of parents, who thronged the school on Tuesday afternoon.

Though the school authorities and medical teams clarified that nothing untoward happened, the parents were not convinced and more gathered there. Later, the school had to declare holiday.

Deputy Director (Health Services) N. Kalusivalingam said five teams had gone to administer vaccine for 750 students. When about 600 students had been vaccinated, the parents objected to the exercise, forcing its stoppage.

Dr. Kalusivalingam said over 35,000 students had been vaccinated on the first day and except for the complaints from a few students, the entire exercise had been smooth. “The headache is due to anxiety among the students. Reassurance given by doctors to the students settles the issue within a few minutes,” he added.
