Rs. 3,500 crore for road development

The State government has allotted nearly Rs. 3,500 crore under the Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme (CRIDP) for widening and improving roads across the State for 2015-16.

A total of 778 State Highways running to a length of 1,203 km will be strengthened and widened from end-to end wherever required at a cost of Rs. 1277 crore. As many as 55 culverts will also be improved.

Major district roads numbering 505 and running to a length of 931.91 km will be covered under works at an estimated cost of Rs. 726 crore.

Single lanes will be converted to intermediate lanes, intermediate lanes to double lane and then those doubled into four lanes as part of the CRIDP, which was introduced at least over a decade ago when the then government felt that such works could not be taken up as part of regular maintenance.

Sources explained that the proposals for these works had been submitted by the respective highways divisions based on needs and then forwarded to the State government for approval.

“End-to-end road laying is taken up on urban stretches where the department has enough land and there is dense commercialisation. Strengthening is done on a regular basis depending on the increase in traffic. The department conducts traffic studies at least once in three years. When there is a considerable increase in traffic, the top two layers of the road are laid,” explained a source.

Among the roads to be improved under the CRIDP 2015-16 are the Adukkam–Kumbakarai road at a cost of Rs. 34.75 crore, Megamalai road at Rs. 60.67 crore and select national highways stretches in Theni and Dindigul at a cost of Rs. 43.40 crore.

The Chennai city roads division will get Rs. 72 crore, Tiruvallur division Rs. 110 crore and Chengalpet division Rs. 124 crore. The East Coast Road from Thiruvanmiyur to Akkarai (11 km), Velachery–Tambaram road, Thiruninravur to Thirupachur road (5 km stretch inside Tiruvallur town limits), Sadras-Thiruttani road (12 km), urban stretch of NH 45 inside Chengalpet town (1.6 km length) will be widened and strengthened.

Tenders will soon be called for works under the CRIDP.
