Rs 1.2 crore seized during vehicle check

A sum of Rs 1.2 crore was recovered on Tuesday during vehicle check here but the persons carrying the cash said they were meant for bank ATMs, police said.

“As a standard procedure, we have passed it on to the Income Tax department who will now verify the claims made by those who were carrying the money,” top police officials said.

Officials said the persons travelling in a car and found in possession of the money, claimed themselves to be part of “some of the group agencies,” involved in depositing cash in ATMs.

Asked if they did not carry relevant documents to make claims, officials said since the money “involved is huge,” IT department will verify those documents.

The Election Commission has put in place strict measures to control money flow amid allegations of cash distribution to voters in Tamil Nadu which is going to polls on Wednesday.

A total of around Rs 40 crore has been recovered from various places in the state with officials seizing over Rs. five crore from a bus at Tiruchirappalli recently.
