An appeal has been made to the Madurai Kamaraj University to recognise the Institute of Gandhian Studies and Research (IGSR) in the Gandhi Memorial Museum here as a research centre.
The issue was raised at the university’s Academic Council meeting held on Thursday. A member, R. Srinivasan, said that the move would benefit research scholars pursuing Gandhian studies and Gandhian Thought. “It is already an approved institute of the university but it will be more beneficial if it is recognised as a research centre as well,” he said.
Vice-Chancellor R. Karpaga Kumaravel said that the matter would be looked in to and a decision taken only if the required number of faculty members was available. The member pointed out that the institute had been offering certificate/diploma courses in Gandhian Thought.
Another request place before the Vice-Chancellor was to take steps for filling up vacancies of administrative/non-teaching posts. The VC said that the next focus would be on non-teaching posts and the university had so far concentrated on filling up the backlog vacancies on teaching side.
