Prohibition Enforcement Wing has recommended closure of 18 Tasmac-run IMFL retail outlets located near bus stands, residential areas and places of worship in the district.

Additional Superintendent of Police (PEW) S. Velladurai said that the wing drew the list in coordination with Special Branch CID police. The wing had recommended that four shops located near new and old bus stands, railway station, a school and a temple be closed down.

It had also recommended the closure of liquor shops located near Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswarm and near a school in Pamban, he said.

Two shops located near the Government Hospital and a temple in Mudukulathur and near bus stands in Kamudhi, Thirupullani, Pandiyur and Kilakarai also figured in the list of shops recommended for closure, he said. The Tasmac District Manager had sent a separate list, recommending the closure of 16 shops which were mostly less remunerative, he said.

Meanwhile, Collector S. Malarvizhi, while addressing a meeting in Sivaganga on Tuesday, said that steps were being taken to close down 19 Tasmac retail outlets in the district, mostly located near schools, places of worship and bus stands.

The closure of shops follows an announcement made by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to close down 500 shops in the State as part of implementing total prohibition in a phased manner.
