NAGERCOIL: Over 70 parents, including 33 women, staged a ‘satyagraha’ in front of Kadayal Government Higher Secondary School on Monday, protesting against change of centre for Plus Two examinations of their children during the current academic year.

The agitation was presided over by president of Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Maideen Mohammed and former president Satyaraj. Mr. Mohammed told reporters that after their repeated plea to authorities to withdraw their order to change the examination centre to a government-aided school failed, the PTA members decided to stage the satyagraha till the demand was met. The protest was held from 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Education Department had cancelled the present examination centre after nearly 37 years, citing poor student strength in the Kadayal school.

The strength of Plus Two students in the school was 57 at present, and it would increase in the coming years, as this was the first government school catering to students from several places in a vast area, even hilly regions.

The PTA members put forth their demands to the Director of School Education, Education Minister and other top officials in person, but to no avail.

Chief Education Officer (in-charge) Veereshwaran could not be contacted for his comment.
