Panel told to consider plea for medical admission

July 05, 2010 11:42 pm | Updated 11:42 pm IST - CHENNAI:

The Madras High Court has directed the Selection Committee, DME, to consider a representation made by the granddaughter of a freedom fighter for admission to MBBS in the light of an earlier High Court judgment.

In her petition, S. Jerlin Lourds sought to quash a clause in the prospectus of 2010-11 for MBBS/BDS course and appendix one, serial number one and code one of the prospectus containing reservation for children for freedom fighters and consequently direct the authorities to include grandchildren also in the clause.

She also sought a direction to give her admission in the MBBS in a college under the seats reserved for children of freedom fighters. She is the granddaughter of a freedom fighter, M. Singarayar.

The petitioner cited the High Court judgment of 2009, which stated that grandchildren of freedom fighters were also entitled for admission under the freedom fighters quota.

Disposing of the petition, Justice K.B.K. Vasuki said that being the limited relief sought, the petitioner was being permitted to submit her representation along with a copy of the court order of September 2009 to the Selection Committee. Copies should be marked to the Health Secretary and the DME. The committee would consider the representation.
