Over 1.66 lakh candidates to appear for VIT entrance exam

A total of 1,66,493 candidates, comprising 1,33,291 boys and 33,202 girls will be appearing for the VIT Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE)-2011 to be conducted by the VIT University, Vellore, in 243 centres in 105 cities all over India and three foreign countries between 2.30 p.m. and 5 p.m. on April 16 to select candidates for admission to 13 B.Tech. programmes on the VIT Vellore and Chennai campuses.

Briefing reporters about here on Monday, G. Viswanathan, VIT Chancellor, said the number of candidates appearing for VITEEE-2011 had increased to 1,66,493 from 1,57,554 last year. Andhra Pradesh accounted for the highest number of 27,864 candidates (as against 28,181 last year), followed by Uttar Pradesh 26,871 (25,653), Bihar 20,178 (16,595), Rajasthan 13,761 (13,248) and Tamil Nadu 11,186 (9499).

Among cities, New Delhi with 20 centres accounted for the highest number of 14,094 candidates (13,874), followed by Hyderabad, where 14,015 candidates would be appearing. A total of 4,921 candidates would be appearing in Chennai (3,922) and 2,161 in Vellore (2,027). A total of 141 candidates (138) would be appearing in the overseas centres in Dubai, Riyadh and Singapore.

The Chancellor said that the VITEEE would be conducted in 11 additional places this year - Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh), Dharmasala (Himachal Pradesh), Jammu (Jammu & Kashmir), Thrissur (Kerala), Thane (Maharashtra), Aizwal (Mizoram), Amritsar (Punjab), Ajmer (Rajasthan), Kumbakonam (Tamil Nadu), and Meerut and Sahranpur (U.P.)

Mr. Viswanathan said the results of VITEEE would be published on the following websites on or before May 6: www.vit.ac.in, www.schools9.com, www.globalinfowings.com, www.indiaresults.com, www.minglebox.com and www.shiksha.com.

Counselling for the candidates who appeared for the VITEEE would be held simultaneously at Vellore and Chennai on the following dates for candidates who obtained ranks between 1 and 16,000: rank 1-4000: June 1; rank 4001-7000: June 2; rank 7001-10,000: June 3; rank 10,001-13,000: June 4; rank 13,001-16,000: June 6.

The Chancellor said the VIT would be offering 100 per cent tuition fee waiver for all four years for toppers in each of the 29 school boards in India, and for toppers in the State Board examinations of each State, under the VIT IGNITE Scholarships Scheme. Under the same scheme, the VIT would be offering 75 per cent tuition fee waiver for candidates who obtained the first 50 ranks in VITEEE for all four years, and 50 per cent tuition fee waiver for all four years for candidates who obtained ranks 51-100 in the entrance examination. The VIT would be offering scholarships to the tune of Rs.1.13 crore per year under the IGNITE Scheme.

Mr. Viswanathan said under the STARS (Support The Advancement of Rural Students) Scheme, the VIT would be offering 100 per cent fee waiver and 100 per cent exemption from hostel and mess fees for district toppers (one boy and one girl each) in all districts in Tamil Nadu from among the students who studied in the government schools in rural areas. Under this scheme, VIT has so far provided scholarships worth Rs.4.06 crore in the last four years, he said.
