Organs of youth declared brain dead harvested

The cornea, two kidneys, liver and the cardiac valves of a youth were harvested through a process of multi-organ retrieval by a team of doctors from Tiruchi and Chennai at KMC Hospital here.

A. Muthuraman (22), a contract employee of Ponmalai Railway Workshop, was declared brain dead after suffering a serious injury during the course of a demonstration on Fire Safety Week at Ponmalai on April 18.

The valve of a fire extinguisher, which he opened to douse the flames, pierced his neck and Muthuraman fell unconscious. He was rushed to Ponmalai Railway Hospital and was admitted to the intensive care unit.

On Wednesday, he was declared brain dead.

Soon, after his father, K.A. Arumugam, a machinist at Ponmalai Railway Workshop, decided to donate Muthuraman's organs.

Cadaver transplant

The process of cadaver transplant, conducted by a group of surgeons, commenced at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, according to nephrologist S. Vel Aravind, who led the team. It ended at about 4 a.m. on Friday.

A team of doctors from Apollo Hospital in Chennai, rushed to Tiruchi by air and liver and the valves of the heart were taken to Chennai immediately by a chartered flight, according to S. Aravindan, Director of KMC Hospital.
