Orders for procuring 40 lakh colour television sets of 14 inches for the fifth phase of free distribution of colour TVs would be placed with 17 companies.
This was decided on Tuesday at a meeting of representatives of legislature parties under the chairmanship of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
According to an official release, 20 firms qualified after the initial round of scrutiny of global tenders. Subsequently, 17 firms were found eligible as three companies did not fulfil all the conditions.
Two companies, Clear Vision Industries and P.G. International, emerged the lowest bidder-1 (L1). After discussions with them, the price per television was determined at Rs.2,061. While the Clear Vision Industries had been asked to supply two lakh TV sets, the P.G. International would provide eight lakh sets. The orders for the remaining 30 lakh sets had been placed with 15 other companies. The official release gave details of break-up of the supplies by the 15 firms.
The release stated that till now, 91,99,065 beneficiaries were given the TV sets at a cost of about Rs.2,195. 38 crore. Under four phases, the nod was given for procuring the sets to cover about 1.12 crore beneficiaries at an estimated cost of around Rs.2,678.37 crore.
