Onset of Northeast monsoon announced

The Meteorological department on Thursday announced the onset of the northeast monsoon with most places of the coastal belt of the State receiving rainfall.

According to a bulletin of the department, Kollidam (Nagapattinam district) recorded a heavy rainfall of 7 cm during the 24-hour-period that ended at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday.

Chengalpattu (Kancheepuram) and Gingee (Villupuram) registered 6 cm each; Sriperumpudur (Kancheepuram), Cuddalore, Puducherry airport, Tiruvarur and Sirkali (Nagapattinam) 5 cm each, and Chennai, Uthiramerur (Kancheepuram), Cholavaram, Chembarampakkam and Tamaraipakkam (all Thiruvallur district), Chidambaram (Cuddalore), Vanur (Villupuram), Muthupet (Thiruvarur), Ramanathapuram, Sathankulam (Tuticorin), Sathanur dam (Tiruvannamalai) and Kodaikanal, 4 cm each.

The bulletin stated that many places of the coastal belt of the State and Puducherry would receive rain or thundershowers on Friday and Saturday.
