One killed, two suffer burns in fire accident

One motorist was killed and two others were critically injured in a fire that broke out in a cracker shop at Bharati Nagar here on Saturday night.

Police identified the deceased as D. Thangavel (50) of Hussian Colony. He, along with his relative S. Muthiah (47) of Rameswaram, was riding a motorbike on Tiruthangal Road when a ball of fire caught them unawares at around 9.40 p.m. Another person, I. Alwin Sridhar (37), also from Hussain Colony, who was coming on another bike was also trapped in the inferno.

Muthiah and Sridhar have been admitted to the Goverment hospital in a critical condition. They are said to have sustained more than 80 per cent burns. The police said that fire from Muthu Traders, a cracker shop, spread to several other shops and a few autorickshaws were also destroyed.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel, along with five fire tenders, from Sivakasi, Sattur and Srivilliputtur, were struggling for nearly two hours to put out the flames.
