One person was killed and two others were seriously injured when unidentified persons lobbed country-made bombs on the trio at Melakuppam near here on Friday night.

The police said that R. Palani, a functionary of the youth wing of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and a brick-kiln owner, was having a chat with tractor driver Vijayakumar and cleaner Sekar on the kiln premises.

Suddenly, a six-member gang barged in and threw country-made bombs at them. While Mr. Palani and Jayakumar took cover behind the bricks, Sekar took the full impact of the explosives in which his face was totally disfigured.

Later, the offenders left the place. Mr. Jayakumar reported the incident to the police. On information, Deputy Inspector General of Police E.Ma.Masanamuthu and Superintendent of Police Ashwin Kotnis, along with a posse of policemen, rushed to the spot.

The police suspect business rivalry as motive for the attack. While Mr. Palani has been referred to a private hospital in Chennai Mr. Jayakumar is undergoing treatment in Cuddalore.
