Missing scientist was run over by train

Ananthanarayanan (37), Scientific Officer of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam, who had been reported missing by his family, was run over by an EMU near Guduvanchery railway station 12 days ago.

On Thursday evening, Ananthanarayanan’s father-in-law Ganesan came to the mortuary of Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital at Chromepet and confirmed that a body lying there was that of the Scientific Officer.

Ananthanarayanan had left his home in the township at Kalpakkam around 8.30 a.m. on February 15. Two days later, his relatives filed a complaint at the Sadurangapattinam police station and a ‘man missing’ case was registered.

On February 15, Government Railway Police, Tambaram, received information about a man knocked down by a suburban EMU at 10.50 a.m. between Guduvanchery and Potheri stations. It was removed and kept at the mortuary.

There was no identity card or papers on the victim’s body and they were unable to establish the identity.

The body was handed over to the family on Friday after post-mortem.

J. Daniel Chellappa, official spokesperson, IGCAR, said Ananthanarayanan belonged to the 40th batch of trainees from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, and was a computer engineer.

He was part of a team that was creating the township’s hospital data management systems for 5,000 employees and their dependants and his work was like any other in public domain. He was not associated with any confidential or classified projects.

Academic projects

He was also into computer modelling and simulation studies as part of other academic projects in the township, Mr. Chellappa added.
