February 12, 2017 01:18 am | Updated 01:18 am IST - Chennai:

A resident of Old Washermenpet on Saturday lodged a complaint with the City Police Commissioner, seeking to trace Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar.

The complainant, K. Naveenkumar, stated that the residents of Royapuram constituency, which Mr. Jayakumar represents, are yet to recover from the massive scale of pollution caused by the recent oil spill. The restoration work hasn’t been completed and the residents are facing health hazards, he said and urged the police to trace the Minister, taking into consideration the livelihood of the fishermen.

More ‘missing’ MLAs

A resident of Soriyampatti in Tiruchi district on Saturday lodged a missing person complaint with the police, seeking to trace the whereabouts of R. Chandrasekar, the AIADMK MLA from Manapparai constituency.

In his complaint, which was lodged with the Thuvarankurichi police, P. Chinnathangam (52) stated that he had been trying to contact Mr. Chandrasekar since February 4 to draw his attention to various issues facing the Manapparai constituency but to no avail as the MLA could neither be reached on his mobile phone, nor in person.

Mr. Chinnathangam told The Hindu that the MLA had been taken to an “undisclosed destination” on East Coast Road in Chennai as part of a larger group of MLAs. “As a representative of the Manapparai constituency, the MLA was duty-bound to meet the residents and the voters. He must be available for the people seeking to air their grievances. However, the people could neither meet him nor talk to him over phone, which has caused undue anxiety to them. Hence, the police should take steps to trace Mr. Chandrasekar,” he added.

Meanwhile, the district president of the Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam, M.P. Chinnadurai, lodged a complaint with the Somarasampettai police here on Saturday, alleging that the AIADMK MLA from Srirangam and Minister for Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare, S. Valarmathi, had gone missing. Claiming that he had been unable to meet the MLA to discuss development projects in the constituency, he alleged that development work had been left in limbo.

The Minister could not be contacted even on her mobile phone, he said and urged the police to trace her whereabouts.
