DMK's working president M.K. Stalin has stepped down as the youth wing secretary of the party after holding the post for 34 years. Former Minister and three-time MLA Vellakkoil M.P. Saminathan has been appointed as the youth wing secretary.

Suba. Chandrasekar, who so far held the post of deputy secretary becomes the joint secretary of the youth wing launched in 1980 in Madurai. The youth wing has its roots in the DMK youth group started by Mr.Stalin in 1966. He became the secretary of the organisation in 1983.

“t is a great honour. I will live up to the expectations of party president Kalaignar, general secretary K. Anbazhagan and working president Thalapathy," said Mr.Saminathan, who was first elected to the Assembly in 1996 from Vellakoil constituency. The name of the constituency became part of his identity.

Subsequently, he was re-elected in 2001 and 2006 from Vellakoil. As a minister, he held the portfolios of Highways between 2006 and 2011. He lost the 2016 Assembly elections.

“I have the experience of working with Thalapathy and I will continue to take guidance from him,” he said.

Asked whether he needed to concentrate more on the Kongu region, which substantially voted for the AIADMK in the 2016 Assembly elections, Mr. Saminathan said he had to pay attention to all the regions and Kongu region required some more ground work.

I will fulfil what is expected from me, said Suba. Chandrasekar, who first became the treasurer of the youth wing in Jayamkondam in 1980. Later, he became deputy organiser of the youth wing of composite Tiruchi district. His wife Meena is the chairman of the Jayamkondam municipality.
