A 27-year-old stalker stabbed a teacher A. Anu Genzi (20) with a knife, after a midnight prayer in a church in Chinnathurai near Nithravilai on New Year’s eve on Saturday.
The victim, who was to get married on January 5, sustained three stab injuries on her stomach. Doctors said her condition was stable.
The police said Biju Gastro of Poonthoppu Colony near Nithravilai was upset on learning about Ms. Genzi’s wedding.
He attacked her just as she came out of the church. Biju was handed over to the police by those nearby.
Ms. Genzi, an employee of a Polytechnic college in Tirunelveli district, was admitted to the NIMS Hospital in Neyyattinkara in Kerala. The police said Biju had been stalking Ms. Genzi for a year and her family members filed a complaint six months ago. He was warned by the police and let off.
After lying low for a while, he resumed stalking Ms. Genzi and insisted that she marry him.
Biju was arrested and produced before a magistrate on Sunday and remanded in judicial custody.
