Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday asked AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa to stop “day-dreaming” of the AIADMK entering into an alliance with the Congress after breaking its ties with the DMK.
“Your dream will never become a reality,” he said, adding that the DMK-Congress alliance in the State was going strong and it would continue even in the 2011 Assembly election and achieve a “massive victory.” This alliance was formed to fight the “communal and disruptive forces in the country,” he said.
Talking to The Hindu from Chennai over the phone on Friday on the alliance issue, Mr. Karunanidhi said Ms. Jayalalithaa was desperate to break the Congress-DMK alliance and replace it with the AIADMK as her party MLAs, senior functionaries and cadres were deserting her, fuming against her style of functioning.
“This is another attempt by her to divert people’s attention from the rumblings in the AIADMK,” he alleged. Fasts, dharnas and other forms of protest being announced by her were part of this strategy.
The DMK leader recalled Ms. Jayalalithaa’s earlier statement questioning Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s “foreign origin issue.” He wanted to know what Ms. Jayalalithaa wanted to say on all these allegations.
On media reports that his son and Union Fertilizer Minister M.K. Azhagiri’s opposition to the hike in urea prices in the Cabinet meeting on Thursday here might lead to straining of the DMK-Congress relationship, he said these were mere media speculation. “Rather the fertilizer issue would prove to be a real fertilizer for strengthening Congress-DMK ties,” he said.
