Kakkan's simplicity and honesty remembered

Speakers at the valediction of Congress leader P. Kakkan's birth centenary celebrations here heaped praise on the leader for his simplicity and honesty in public life.

In a meeting organised by the Congress, they also wanted the party to get its due share in power in Tamil Nadu.

Former State Minister in Madras Presidency, G. Boovaraghan, narrated various incidents to highlight Kakkan's simplicity. He never sought any favour from any persons, including party cadres.

Congress leader S. Thirunavukkarasar said that despite having served as a minister for ten years, Kakkan was so simple that he willingly slept on the verandah of the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai when he was ill. “It was M.G. Ramachandran who provided him a decent accommodation,” he said. He wanted the Congress cadres to vow that efforts would be taken to bring about a coalition government in Tamil Nadu in 2011 in which Congress too shared power. “In the next election, Congress would come to power on its own,” he added.

Dindigul M.P., N.S.V. Chitthan, recalled an incident in which Kakkan forced his daughter Kasturi to return two gold bangles to an industrialist who had gifted them on her marriage. He hoped that the meeting would be a turning point in Tamil Nadu politics. The noble principles of great leaders like Kamaraj and Kakkan would guide the party for ever, he added.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, K.V. Thangkabalu, presided over the meeting in which Union Home Minister, P. Chidambaram, Union Minister for Shipping, G.K. Vasan, Kakkan's brother, P. Vadivel, his daughter, Kasturi, MPs, E.M. Sudarsana Natchiappan, S. Ramasubbu, B. Manicka Tagore and P. Viswanthan also spoke.
