An insurance scheme for students of colleges affiliated to the University of Madras will be introduced soon, Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam said on Monday.
Speaking to The Hindu , Dr. Thiruvasagam said a meeting of college principals held on Monday had decided to institute the insurance scheme with Rs.50,000 for injuries to students and Rs.1 lakh in case of death. The University would soon be looking for reputed insurance companies for the purpose, he said.
At the meeting, it was also decided to have professional counsellors in all colleges.
In case of difficulties, one counsellor’s services may be shared by a number of colleges, he said.
An international student summit would be organised as part of these efforts on March 19, to which the consuls-general of various countries would be invited, he added.
