Highways Minister hands over dividend cheque to Chief Minister

Twenty minor ports in the State handled cargo of nine lakh tonnes during 2008-2009. When the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board was established in 1997, there were 11 such ports in the State which handled cargo of about 40,000 tonnes annually.

As a sequel to the State government’s policy of development of minor ports, the number of the ports went up. Because of the volume of cargo handled by the minor ports last year, the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board netted revenue of Rs. 7.33 crore. The total revenue earned by the Board in the previous year was Rs. 15.1 crore.

On Friday, Vellakoil M.P. Saminathan, Highways and Minor Ports Minister, handed over a cheque for Rs. 2.75 crore to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at the Secretariat towards dividend. G. Santhanam, Highways and Minor Ports Secretary, Mohan Verghese Chunkath, Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Board, were among those present.
