Habeas corpus petitions treated as closed

The Madras High Court on Thursday treated as closed, habeas corpus petitions (HCPs) demanding production of those “illegally detained” by police in connection with the blast on railway track near Villupuram on Saturday before the court and setting them at liberty.

In his counter to the petitions filed by Jothi of P. Viliyanur and others, the Superintendent of Police, Villupuram district, P. Pakalavan, said following the blast, police had summoned nearly 75 villagers of the surrounding areas. After obtaining information, they were let off. Investigation was being done in accordance with law. No arrests had been made so for and none detained illegally.

In its order, a Division Bench, comprising Justices C. Nagappan and P.R. Shivakumar, said counsel had submitted that the detenus had been let off. From the counter also it was seen that investigation was in progress and no arrest had been made and no person detained illegally. The Bench recorded the submission in the counter and said the HCPs were being treated as closed.
