Government sets up panel on panchami lands

January 17, 2011 12:13 am | Updated 12:13 am IST - CHENNAI:

The State Government on Sunday notified the constitution of a committee headed by former Madras High Court Judge M. Maruthamuthu to examine the various issues relating to charges of large scale appropriation of lands assigned to the panchama community by non-scheduled caste people.

Suggest measures

The committee, also comprising former bureaucrats I. V. Maivannan and V. Karuppan, and the Land Administration Commissioner, will suggest measures within the legal framework for restoring the ownership of panchami lands to the original allottees. An official release said the committee was formed in response to the representations the Government had been receiving about the illegal transfer of ownership and encroachment of these lands by changing title deeds and violating norms.

Two other committees

The Government also constituted two other committees relating to the film/television sector.

A committee headed by former High Court Judge P. Bhaskaran will select quality low-budget films produced between 2007 and 2010 that are eligible for Government grants.

Panel members

Other panel members are filmmaker Ramanarayanan, former Doordarshan Kendra Director A. Natarajan and actors Vagai Chandrasekar, Saroja Thangavelu and Sripriya.

Another panel headed by former High Court Judge K. Shanmugam has been set up to choose television serials, artistes and technicians for the Government awards for 2009-10.
