Four held for attack on Inspector

Alangulam police have arrested four persons for allegedly damaging a police vehicle and throwing stones at an Inspector of Police when he was providing security during a temple festival held near Alangulam on Tuesday night.

The police said a group of youths, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, troubled women devotees during Mariamman Temple festival at Kuruvankottai near Alangulam on Tuesday night. When Special Sub-Inspector of Police Arumugam asked the troublemakers to leave the spot where the women were standing in large numbers, the youths turned their mischief towards the police officer. Consequently, the law-enforcers picked up one Ranjit (21) and took him to the police vehicle parked nearby.

Even as Ranjit’s associates picked a heated argument with the police demanding the release of their friend, some unidentified persons pelted stones at the police vehicle in which its windscreen was smashed. Inspector Athilinga Bose was injured when a stone hit his chin. Immediately, the police arrested Ranjit and his associates Annamalai Selvam (21), Selvam (20) and Nagarajan (26).
