Fisheries Bill: Karunanidhi expresses happiness

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday expressed happiness over the Union government’s move to follow a consensual approach on the Marine Fisheries (Regulation and Management) Bill.

In a letter to Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, the Chief Minister said he was “extremely happy” to note that the Centre would hold detailed consultations with all concerned before finalising the legislation.

He referred to the discussion between the Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran and Mr Pawar on the issue.

He thanked Mr Pawar for having decided not to introduce the legislation in the current session of Parliament in response to his request. He was thankful to the Union Minister and the Centre for taking “a good and timely decision,” taking into account the problems of the fishermen in the country.

Mr Karunanidhi recalled his letter to Mr Pawar last month in which he conveyed the apprehensions of the Tamil Nadu fishermen about certain adverse clauses in the draft Bill.
