A 10-year-old female elephant died in an encounter with a male elephant during mating at Seethamarathu Odai at Thekanthottam village near Palar-Porundhalar river here on Sunday.

The female elephant died in the attack by the male elephant during mating, and Forest Department officials inspected the spot. The forest officials could not go near the carcass as it was surrounded by a herd of wild elephants. Later, they chased them away, and buried the carcass after a post-mortem.
