Tuition fee waiver for first generation students announced by the State government is having a “positive impact” on engineering admission counselling, according to Anna University-Chennai Vice-Chancellor P. Mannar Jawahar.

He said there were only 16 per cent absentees this year so far at the counselling compared to the 25 per cent witnessed during last year's admission process.

“Our enquiries show that the State government's decision to waive the tuition fee for first generation students has been well received by rural people,” Dr. Jawahar told The Hindu here on Thursday. “The fee waiver has come as a boon to rural students.”

He said there were only 16 per cent absentees this year so far at the counselling compared to the 25 per cent witnessed during last year's admission process. “The fee waiver has come as a boon to rural students as per the information we have.”

Dr. Jawahar was in the city to distribute offer letters to 574 candidates who were recruited to three IT companies during a State-level Placement Programme organised by the Anna University-Chennai across the State.

Tamil medium

Textbooks for students who wanted to study engineering in Tamil medium were being prepared semester-wise. “Already, the first semester textbooks for B.E. Tamil medium students have been released. The textbooks for second and third semesters will be sent for printing soon as the translation work has been completed,” he said.

For the remaining semesters, the staff to undertake translation work had been identified and the Tamil medium textbooks would be ready in due course. “The B.E. syllabus prepared for English medium in 2008 is being followed for Tamil medium too. All the required textbooks will be made available in time.”
