A team of engineers from Goa was conducting “survey” for another alignment for the Sethusamudram Shipping Channel project, an official said on Monday.

Assistant Director of Fisheries department Elamvazhuthi said, they were carrying out the survey without hindering the ‘Rama sethu’, a mythological bridge believed to have been built by Lord Ram in Palk Strait.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the area between Vedaranyan and Arichalmunai and Dhanushkodi, where the officials were conducting the survey in five mechanised boats and three country boats, fitted with Global Positioning equipment.

The survey pictures were being transmitted to New Delhi directly by the team members for assessment, he said.

The Sethusamudram project for which DMK has been pressing strongly is expected to help ships avoid a 785 km detour around Sri Lanka.
