: A peace committee meeting chaired by Vanur tahsildar Kamasingh resolved to take possession of the government poromboke land encroached by a few persons at Karattai village in Vanur block and hand it over to the Dalits in a month.
A resolution to this effect was passed at the meeting held at Vanur on Wednesday. Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) general secretary D. Ravikumar said the meeting also decided to remove the illegal encroachments, measure the land and hand it over to the beneficiaries.
House pattas
'Mr. Ravikumar said that free house site pattas were allotted to 58 Dalit families in Karattai village under a government scheme in 2008. However, the families have not been able to access the lands as a group of caste Hindus from the village had encroached upon the lands.
Since then the Dalit families have been waging a battle with a few members from the other community. Despite repeated attempts, the villagers have not been able to evict the encroachers and retrieve their lands.
An inquiry by the special tahsildar in April confirmed the encroachments based on which a report was sent to the concerned Block Development Officer directing the caste Hindus to move out on their own within 21 days, he added.
