Disability rights activists shelve siege plan

January 18, 2017 01:02 am | Updated 01:02 am IST - CHENNAI:

After a meeting with senior health officials on Tuesday, members of disability rights organisations have shelved the siege plan.

The meeting came in the wake of a stand-off between doctors and disability rights activists in Tiruvannamalai over the issuing of disability certificates, which had then led to the organisations calling for a siege to the Directorate of Medical and Rural Health Services on January 18.

According to T.M.N. Deepak, State president, December 3 Movement, the government has assured that G.O. No. 21 would be implemented within 60 days.

“We were also assured that the issue of us having to obtain multiple certificates would be taken up,” he said. This apart, a committee under the Health Secretary would meet every quarter to review health-related issues of disabled persons, he said.

A senior government health official said considering that a new law has just been enacted , it was agreed that capacity building of trainers would be done under the State Health Society so that there were no interpretation issues at the district levels.
