Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president E.V.K.S. Elangovan appeared before the District Sessions and Principal Judge S. Sathi Kumar in connection with a criminal defamation case filed against him by the Public Prosecutor A. Gnanasekar on behalf of the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa here on Thursday.

The case was filed against Mr. Elangovan and Vilavancode MLA and Congress Whip in Assembly S. Vijayadharini for allegedly making defamatory remarks against the Chief Minister at a public meeting held at Karungal Market on September 27, 2015.

The defamation case against Mr. Elangovan was taken first at 10.15 a.m. and a copy of the petition was handed over to him. As no advocate represented Mr. Elangovan due to the week-long boycott, the Judge adjourned the case to July 18.

Earlier, on Wednesday, the judge issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Ms. Vijayadharini, as she failed to appear before the court and was not represented the same through an advocate.
