Neither has Tamil Nadu given away anything nor Kerala gained from the Supreme Court constituting a high-level empowered committee to go into all issues including the safety aspects of the Mullaperiyar dam, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Friday. “Some hasty people who say that Tamil Nadu government has been betrayed and it has surrendered [its rights] are doing so only to gain nothing but political mileage.”
The Court on Thursday appointed the committee, headed by former Chief Justice of India A.S. Anand. Mr. Karunanidhi added that Tamil Nadu had argued in the Supreme Court that the Kerala Irrigation and Water Conservation (Amendment) Act, 2006 was invalid while Kerala contended that it had the right to enact such a law. The Court stipulated a timeframe of six months for the Committee to give report.
