DMK govt. perpetuating the memory of Ambedkar

February 01, 2010 08:29 pm | Updated 08:29 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Monday explained the efforts made by his government to perpetuate the memory of B.R. Ambedkar, Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee.

Addressing a function, he recalled how a college in Perambur here and a university in the State were named after Ambedkar. He referred to the role played by Sathyavani Muthu, former Minister, in ensuring that the college was named after Dr. Ambedkar.

The Chief Minister said when he came to know that Dalits in Maharashtra were on an agitation for 12 years to press the implementation of a resolution adopted by the Maharashtra Assembly that a university in that State be named after Dr. Ambedkar, he had issued a call to his party members to send telegraphic messages to the Governor and Ministers of the western State. P.C. Alexander, the then Governor, had subsequently sent him a letter. Later, the agitation came to an end and the university in the name of Dr. Ambedkar was established.
