The DMK and the Congress have won most of the seats in elections held on Monday to fill casual vacancies in rural and urban local bodies, with the ruling party's candidates walking away with 42 of the 71 seats for which polls were held on party basis.
The Tamil Nadu State Election Commissioner, Syed Munir Hoda, said on Wednesday that while 78 vacancies were notified, there were no nominations for seven of them. Thirty-three of the remaining 71 were filled without contest, with candidates getting elected unopposed.
Final results announced after counting of votes on Wednesday showed that the DMK won 42 seats, Congress 11, CPI(M) and Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi (VCK) one each. Independents emerged winners in 15 seats. The result was not declared in respect of one seat.
The DMK's tally included 16 posts of panchayat union ward members and 26 posts in urban local bodies. The Congress won six rural and five urban wards.
In Corporation elections, C. Arunmozhi (DMK) won Ward No.93 in Chennai unopposed while the election of K. Murugeswari, who was declared elected unopposed in Ward No.45 in Madurai, will be subject to the orders of the Madras High Court. M. Vivekanandan, an independent, was elected by contest in Ward No.5 in Erode Corporation.
