Centre failed to check price rise: BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday urged the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre to control the rise in prices of essential commodities instead of leaving this task to the States.

A resolution to this effect was passed at the State executive meeting of the BJP here.

Accusing the Manmohan Singh government of failing to control inflation, the party said the Centre had powers to bring down prices but was shifting this responsibility on to the State governments.

“The Union government is vested with the powers to control rising prices through the market intervention mechanisms such as importing essential food items or banning export of certain items,” BJP State vice-president H. Raja said briefing reporters on the resolutions adopted.

Law and order

The party said the law and order situation had deteriorated in the State and this was evident from the recent murders of women in Chennai.

The meeting urged Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to take corrective measures.

It called upon the government to establish yarn banks to stabilise the price of cotton and silk. This would ease the problems faced by handloom weavers.

Mr. Raja accused the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam of not having shown enough interest in implementing the Hogenakkal drinking water project.
