The Directorate of Census Operations on Tuesday started house listing and housing census operations in the State.
Officials of the Directorate started the operations in the city by gathering information from Governor Surjit Singh Barnala. “Over 1.5 lakh enumerators and supervisors will be engaged for conducting house listing and housing census in Tamil Nadu from June 1 to July 15,” said S. Gopalakrishnan, Director of Census Operations, Tamil Nadu.
This is part of the preliminary phase of Census 2011 involving collection of information on the household, its head, amenities and assets.
“The house listing and housing census 2010 and National Population Register 2010 will be undertaken simultaneously in the State during the 45-day period,” he added.
The type of information gathered on the household includes the total number of residents, use of the census house and material used for floor, wall and roof.
Other details include the name of the head of the household, sex, community, ownership, number of dwelling rooms and number of married couples. The enumerators would also seek details on the amenities available in the household such as source of drinking water, its availability, source of lighting, latrine, waste water outlet, bathing facility, kitchen and fuel used for cooking.
They would record information on use of banking services and assets such as radio, television, computer, telephone, bicycle, motorcycle and car.
The creation of National Population Register (NPR) is also simultaneously undertaken in the first phase to collect personal details of all residents. The capture of photographs and finger biometry of the residents aged 15 and above would be undertaken later, Mr. Gopalakrishnan said.
The post-independence census in the country is conducted once in ten years under the constitutional provisions by notification under the Census Act 1948.
