A sum of Rs. 47 lakh was seized from a car during a vehicle check by police and Revenue Department officials here on Friday. As the persons in the car did not produce proper documents for carrying the cash, the officials seized the amount and informed District Collector M. S. Shanmugham about it. The Collector asked them to hand over the amount to the Income Tax Department. Later, the occupants of the car established to Income Tax Department officials that they are officials of a nationalised bank and were transporting money from Ayyampettai branch to Thanjavur main branch. After that, the cash was returned to the bank.
The officials who carried the money were reprimanded.

The Static Surveillance Squads of the election machinery seized about Rs.14.69 lakh in four separate incidents during a vehicle check in two Assembly constituencies. The static surveillance committees formed by the Election Commission of India were for monitoring the poll related expenditure, distribution of cash/freebies to the voters.
In Periyanaickenpalayam, the teams at one place seized unaccounted cash Rs. 5 lakh and Rs. 2.5 lakh each at two places during vehicle checks in Mettuppalayam Assembly Constituency. The persons who possessed the cash were not able to furnish accounts or proof for the money. Later, during a vehicle check in Kinathukkadavu Assembly Constituency on Siruvani Road near Madampatti, the officials intercepted a motor cycle and recovered Rs. 4.69 lakh.

Officials seized “unaccounted money” of Rs. 10.20 lakh at two places during vehicle check on Friday.
When the police and revenue officials were conducting vehicle check at Azad Nagar check-post near Tenkasi on Friday, they intercepted a vehicle from which they seized “unaccounted money” of Rs. 9.20 lakh. In a vehicle check conducted in Tuticorin on Friday by Deputy Tahsildar Kumar, a car registered in Kerala with Rs. 1 lakh in cash was seized. Subsequently, car driver A. Abdul Majib (40) of Kollam was questioned.
