Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Tuesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to thank him for enabling the conduct of jallikattu in the State.
His letter comes less than a week after M. Thambi Durai, Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker accused the Centre of being responsible for the stand-off on the rural sport, that eventually ended in violence on January 23.
“On behalf of the Government and the people of Tamil Nadu, I thank you for all your support and assistance in enabling jallikattu to be held in Tamil Nadu once again, upholding the culture and tradition of the people of Tamil Nadu,” Mr. Panneerselvam said in his letter to Mr. Modi, a copy of which was released to the media.
The legislation passed in the State Legislative Assembly to replace the ordinance promulgated to facilitate the conduct of jallikattu received the President’s assent on Tuesday, he said.
