Bomb squad trainer injured as dummy explosive goes off

A Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad trainer, Selvam, sustained injuries in his hand after a dummy explosive device exploded accidentally during a demonstration at a police training programme at the Armed Reserve grounds here on Tuesday.

According to sources, Mr. Selvam, an ex-serviceman, was conducting a demonstration on handling explosives and how to react in case of bomb attacks using the dummy explosive when it went off accidentally. He sustained injuries in three fingers on his hand. He was immediately rushed to the Perambalur Government Hospital and later referred to a private hospital in Tiruchi.

The demonstration was part of a 40-day “ranger commando” training for about 90 policemen drawn from Central Zone, comprising Tiruchi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Karur, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts.

Following the incident, A.Amalraj, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tiruchi Range, S.Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Perambalur, and senior officials visited the spot and conducted enquiries. Further investigations were on.
