Actor and former MP S.S. Chandran passes away

Former AIADMK MP and comedian S.S. Chandran died on Friday. He was 69.

Mr. Chandran suffered a heart attack when he returned to his room in Mannargudi after attending a party meeting in Muthupettai in Tiruvarur. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, sources said, but was declared "dead-on-arrival". His body was brought to the city on Saturday morning.

He has acted in over 700 films, having started performing at the age of 15. Among his more popular films are: Sahadevan Mahadevan , Thangamani Rangamani , Paati Sollai Thattathey , and Kathanayagan . Mr. Chandran has also produced four films.

He served as a Rajya Sabha MP from 2001- 2007 and at the time of his death, he was the deputy secretary (propaganda) for the AIADMK. In her condolence message, AIADMK party general secretary Jayalalithaa said the news of the actor's death brought great sorrow to her. For the party, it was an irreplaceable loss, she added. Ms. Jayalalithaa also visited his residence to express her condolences to the family.

Mr. Chandran is survived by his wife, daughter, and two sons.
