Activists seek action against Salem prison officials

Social activists and members of various organisations expressed concern over the alleged attack on environmental activist Piyush Manush, who is in prison, and demanded his release immediately. They sought action against prison officials. Salem Citizens Forum here on Sunday organised a campaign “Stand With Piyush” in which over 300 activists from throughout the State participated. Addressing them, Monica Sethia, wife of Mr. Manush, alleged that he was beaten up at the Salem Central Prison by prison officials which are extreme violations of human rights. “He is under tremendous depression and could not speak frankly to me as officials were standing near us,” she said.

Founder of Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam Kolathur Mani said the arrest was unnecessary as the activist had been fighting for a cause in creating awareness among the public. He condemned the attack on Mr. Manush inside the prison and wanted action against the prison officials.

N. Sivakumar, State coordinator for National Alliance for People’s Movement, said Mr. Manush not only restored waterbodies, but also helped victims during the floods last year in Chennai and Cuddalore. His work was recognised at the national-level, he said and questioned why he was not released on bail when two other members were. Lawyer P. Mayan said a petition under Section 54 of the Cr.P.C. would be filed before the District Magistrate on Monday demanding examination of Mr. Manush by a doctor.

He wanted a retired or serving judge to inquire into the attack and bring out the truth.

Mr. Manush, along with two of his associates, was arrested on July 8 for opposing the construction of flyover at Mulvadi Gate. They demanded that land acquisition for the bridge should be completed before starting the work and alternative road laid across the tracks near the Town Railway Station. When they staged an agitation, they were arrested. While the two associates were released on conditional bail, Mr. Manush continues to be in prison.
