The City Public Prosecutor (CPP) has submitted to the court of the Principal Sessions Judge a complaint seeking criminal action against a Tamil bi-weekly magazine for defaming Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in an article in the issue dated July 21 last year.
In the complaint, filed on behalf of the Chief Minister, CPP M. Shahjahan stated that the article in Junior Vikatan , under the headline “Udainthathu Thandavaalam ….Udaigirathu Vandavalam,” relating to the bomb blast on the railway track near Perani station in Villupuram district on June 12 2010, had been against the Chief Minister.
It referred to Mr. Karunanidhi using malicious and per se defamatory words. The matter contained false and baseless allegations. It damaged the Chief Minister's reputation in the eyes of party cadres and general public.
Soon after the incident, the police had swung into action and investigation commenced. The government had taken serious efforts in the matter of investigation. A case was registered by the Vikravandi police and later investigation was taken up by the `Q' branch CID. Investigation was still on.
The complainant prayed the court to punish the accused for an offence under section 499 punishable under section 500 and 501 IPC.
