Panic gripped the Trauma Ward of Government General Hospital here for sometime on Thursday afternoon after a man involved in several crime cases and admitted to the hospital with a fractured leg attacked a sub-inspector of police and a constable with a surgical scissors.

The incident happened when the suspect, Hari alias Munnroad Hari (26) of Cuddalore, tried to flee from the hospital. When the police attempted to apprehend him in Cuddalore a few days ago, he climbed a wall, fell down and fractured a leg.

He was admitted to the Cuddalore GH from where he was shifted to the GH here on Tuesday for further treatment, police said. Around 3.30 p.m. on Thursday, Hari turned impatient after policemen informed him that he was going to be remanded and taken to Cuddalore. Ka. Shanmugavel, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Flower Bazaar said Hari snatched the scissors from a nurse and threatened the four policemen on duty in the ward. Following this, additional police personnel were rushed to the ward.

When they tried to subdue him, he stabbed a policeman in the chest and another in the eye. He was, however, overpowered. Sub Inspector of Police, Flower Bazaar, Gunasekaran (56), who was stabbed in the chest was admitted to the same ward. Armed Reserve Constable Stanley (29) was taken to Government Eye Hospital.
