There has been a series of protest rallies across the State over the past few days seeking lifting of the ban.

Chief Minister blames DMK for the ban on jallikattu.

The ruling AIADMK on Wednesday stepped up pressure on the Centre for the conduct of jallikattu during the Pongal festival.

In a statement, Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam said the government would guarantee the conduct of the bull-taming sport. “The State will not take even one step backwards,” he said.

Despite representations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi twice in the past month seeking the promulgation of an ordinance for conducting jallikattu, the Centre had not responded, he lamented.

The Chief Minister also blamed the DMK as being responsible for the ban on jallikattu. The DMK was part of the UPA government in 2011 when the order to include bulls in the list of performing animals was passed, he charged.

Earlier in the day, AIADMK general secretary V.K. Sasikala wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking an ordinance to amend the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Separately, a delegation of AIADMK MPs led by Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M. Thambi Durai met Union Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave at New Delhi and submitted a memorandum seeking an ordinance. However, Mr. Dave refused to give any assurance. Talking to reporters, he said the government was not in a position to unilaterally decide on de-notifying bulls as ‘performing animals’ without taking cognisance of the Supreme Court verdict.

“A decision could be taken even at midnight the day the Supreme Court passes orders. Doing anything before that would, in my view, be improper,” he added.
